Royal Flying Doctor Service: National coverage for Outback Car Trek 2020
In 2020, following the national coverage I secured the previous year, I was determined to once again attract national media attention for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (South Eastern Section) (RFDSSE) and its largest annual fundraiser, The Outback Car Trek.
Recognising the charity's struggle to increase their donor base among younger individuals and those living in major cities, I seized the opportunity to launch the fundraiser at Bondi Beach. I crafted a campaign comparing the medical services available in Bondi with those in regional centres like Cobar.
I arranged for weatherman Sam Mac to record all seven live weather crosses from the Outback Car Trek media launch at Bondi Beach. This initiative got our frontline staff on air and highlighted the vital work of the Flying Doctor. Each 30-minute weather cross with Sam Mac promoted the cause and featured interviews with former patients, Chief Medical Officer Dr Randall Greenberg, flight nurses, and trekkers.
After filming my own interviews at the launch, immediately after Sunrise concluded the show, I quickly put together a package of b-roll, filmed interviews with Dr Randall Greenberg, flight nurses, photographs, along with a media release and infographic explaining the disparity between city and regional health care and distributed it to my city-based and regional-based media list.
Thanks to my efforts, in addition to national coverage on Sunrise, I also secured substantial regional media coverage in newspapers, on radio, and on television.
